Ahrefs, founded in 2010 and run from Singapore by Ahrefs Pte. Ltd., is an SEO platform whose own crawler feeds a backlink index the vendor puts at about 35 trillion external links. One login covers backlinks, keywords, site audits, rank tracking and Brand Radar, which samples AI answers from assistants such as ChatGPT and Gemini.

About Ahrefs

Ahrefs is an SEO and marketing platform operated by Ahrefs Pte. Ltd. in Singapore. Its team page lists Dmytro Gerasymenko as CEO and founder, third-party profiles date the company to 2010, and its own about page calls it proudly bootstrapped. The product is built on a crawler: the vendor says AhrefsBot has run around the clock since 2013 and that its backlink index is owned entirely by Ahrefs rather than licensed from Google or Bing. Buyers are mostly freelance SEOs, in-house marketing teams and agencies.

The core tools are Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit, Rank Tracker and Brand Radar. Site Explorer shows a competitor's backlinks, ranking keywords and top pages. Keywords Explorer estimates search volume, difficulty and traffic potential for 217 locations or more. Site Audit crawls a site for technical problems, and Rank Tracker follows positions, refreshed weekly by default. Brand Radar adds AI answers to the picture by running sampled prompts through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, then reporting mentions, citations and share of voice. The vendor calls this a structured sample rather than real-time monitoring, and its own FAQ says organic traffic estimates can differ noticeably from Search Console figures.

Plans differ mostly in limits, not tools. Historical data runs from 6 months on Lite to 5 years on Advanced, tracked keywords from 750 to 5,000, and tracked AI prompts from 5 to 20. Starter and Lite meter lookups with credits, while Standard and above use a fair-use model with no hard cap. Lite, Standard and Advanced each include one seat, and extra seats are charged per user. Brand Radar can be bought on its own, and a free account for sites you can verify covers Site Audit and limited Site Explorer data.

An API and a hosted MCP server come with Lite and above, so assistants such as Claude or ChatGPT can pull live Ahrefs data, with every request drawing on a fixed monthly allowance of API units. The closest alternatives on HokAI are Semrush, which bundles its own AI visibility tracking, Surfer SEO, which scores drafts against ranking pages, and Peec AI, which tracks AI answers only. For the writing side, where Ahrefs itself offers AI Content Helper, Clearscope grades drafts live while Frase builds briefs. For category context, read the AI search visibility directory and the best AI search visibility guide; Smart Match picks between them for a specific brief.

Pricing

Ahrefs Free costs nothing but only covers sites whose ownership you can verify, and the pricing FAQ answers a question about free trials by pointing to Ahrefs Free, adding that Ahrefs never runs discounts. On monthly billing the paid plans are Starter from $29, Lite $129, Standard $249 and Advanced $449 a month, with Enterprise at $1,499 a month on an annual commitment. Paying annually brings Lite to $108, Standard to $208 and Advanced to $374 a month, which the vendor describes as paying for 10 months and getting 12. Extra seats cost $40 on Lite, $60 on Standard, $80 on Advanced and $100 on Enterprise per user a month, so a three-person team on Standard pays $369 a month at monthly list price. At the same list prices a tracked keyword works out near $0.17 on Lite, $0.12 on Standard and $0.09 on Advanced.

Brand Radar AI can be bought alone from $199 a month, and custom prompt packages cost $50, $100 or $250 a month for 2,500, 7,000 or 25,000 checks, with overage at $0.020, $0.015 or $0.010 a check. Add-ons include Report Builder at $99 a month, Content Kit from $99 a month and per-project Boost packages. API units cannot be topped up on Lite, Standard or Advanced, and the vendor does not give refunds in general. Prices were read from ahrefs.com/pricing on 2026-10-19. For tools priced differently see Semrush, which lists a Free plan and an AI Visibility Base plan, and Peec AI for a narrower AI-answer tracker.

Key Features

  • Site Explorer backlink research: Shows any domain's backlinks, ranking keywords and top pages from an index the vendor sizes at about 35 trillion external links, with new links processed every 15 to 30 minutes.
  • Keywords Explorer: Returns search volume, keyword difficulty, traffic potential and parent topic for 217 locations or more, though the vendor says keyword data is thinner in small markets such as some Baltic and African countries.
  • Site Audit: Crawls a site for more than 170 technical issue types and groups them by severity with fix guidance; Site Audit and Rank Tracker use separate limits instead of credits.
  • Rank Tracker: Tracks positions down to city or ZIP level across devices, updates weekly by default, and can filter for keywords that trigger Google AI Overviews.
  • Brand Radar: Samples prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Grok, Claude and Google AI Overviews and reports mentions, citations, AI share of voice and sentiment against competitors you add.
  • API and hosted MCP server: Included from Lite upward, with a fixed allowance of API units per billing cycle and tighter row caps per request on the lower tiers.
  • AI Content Helper and Report Builder: The Helper scores a draft against top-ranking pages, and Report Builder emails scheduled PDF reports to recipients who need no Ahrefs account.

Pros

  • Limits are published rather than buried: credit rules, seat prices, API-unit caps and refund terms are all spelled out on the pricing page and FAQ, so the real monthly bill is easy to estimate before buying.
  • A free account for verified sites includes Site Audit with a monthly crawl budget per project and a limited Site Explorer, so a site owner can start without paying.
  • Brand Radar is sold standalone, so a buyer who only wants AI-answer tracking does not have to take the full SEO suite.

Cons

  • Credits bite on the cheaper plans: on Starter and Lite, opening a report or applying a filter costs credits that reset each cycle and do not roll over, and the vendor admits the model can feel restrictive for frequent lookups.
  • Seats and API units add cost: extra seats are charged on every plan, and API units cannot be topped up below Enterprise, so heavy MCP use can stall until the next cycle.
  • Review sites disagree: Trustpilot shows 2.2 from 324 reviews against 4.5 from 720 on G2, and the Trustpilot review read (April 2026) complains about pricing, upsells and data reliability, although a single review proves little.
  • Estimates are estimates: the vendor FAQ puts traffic-estimate variance at roughly 20 to 50 percent against Search Console, and rankings refresh weekly, so it suits trend work more than daily monitoring.
  • No SOC 2 report yet: the vendor says certification is in progress, and SAML single sign-on and the Guest role are Enterprise-only.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do you pay for Ahrefs?

Lite starts at $129 a month, Standard is $249 and Advanced $449, with Starter from $29 and Enterprise at $1,499 (annual commitment required). Paying yearly saves roughly 17 percent. Extra seats run $40 to $100 per user a month depending on tier, and Brand Radar can be bought alone from $199 a month.

Does Ahrefs have a free plan?

Yes, with a catch: Ahrefs Free requires you to verify ownership of the site, so it cannot be used to research competitors. It gives Site Audit with 5,000 crawl credits per verified project each month and a limited Site Explorer, plus Web Analytics and AI Content Helper. The no-account tools are thinner still, since the Backlink Checker shows only a capped top list of backlinks, and the pricing FAQ points to Ahrefs Free where a trial would be.

What should you use instead of Ahrefs?

Semrush, Surfer SEO and Peec AI are the closest records on HokAI. Semrush puts AI visibility tracking and classic SEO data in one subscription, Surfer SEO scores drafts against ranking pages but has limited keyword research and no backlink data, and Peec AI tracks AI answers only. Stay with Ahrefs when link data from its own crawler is the main job.

Is Ahrefs better than Semrush?

Ahrefs' own FAQ casts it as the depth choice for backlinks and keyword data and Semrush as the breadth choice across channels, which is a vendor's view of a rival. On Trustpilot, HokAI's Semrush record shows 1.6 from 1,422 reviews, a lower score than Ahrefs, and neither shows a SOC 2 report. Compare Semrush's bundled AI visibility plan with Ahrefs' separately priced Brand Radar before deciding.

How do you set up Ahrefs?

Create an account, add a project for your domain and verify ownership, which unlocks Ahrefs Free and the project tools. Then connect Google Search Console, schedule Site Audit crawls and add target keywords and competitors to Rank Tracker. The vendor says core features click within a few weeks, and the free Ahrefs Academy courses cover the rest.

Top Alternatives

  • Semrush: Pick Ahrefs if link analysis from its own crawler is the core job, and Semrush if digital PR, content optimization and AI visibility tracking should share one subscription.
  • Surfer SEO: Pick Surfer SEO if the work is scoring individual drafts against ranking pages, and Ahrefs if you also need backlink and keyword research data.
  • Peec AI: Pick Peec AI if tracking how AI assistants describe your brand is the whole job, and Ahrefs if that tracking should sit beside backlink and keyword data.
