Pick it if you want a delegate that finishes whole jobs, such as research, documents, email and scheduled monitoring, instead of an answer engine. It chooses the model for each task for you. Credits make the cost hard to predict, so start with small tasks before committing to heavier use.

About Perplexity Computer
Perplexity Computer is the task-doing side of Perplexity. The company behind it, Perplexity AI, describes it as an independent digital worker: you give it a goal, it plans the steps, uses tools, and hands back a finished document, app, spreadsheet or sent email instead of a list of links. That is the line between it and the Ask search box, which stays free of credits. Perplexity's own help page sums it up as "Perplexity answers your questions. Computer does your work."
Under the hood, Perplexity says Computer builds teams of agents across a pool of frontier models and picks the mix per task, so you do not choose a model by hand. Its pricing page names models from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and NVIDIA. Tasks run in an isolated cloud sandbox with persistent memory, can be scheduled or triggered by conditions such as a new email, and chain research, analysis, document creation and delivery in one session. Hundreds of connectors reach email, code hosts, chat, wikis and data warehouses.
Personal Computer is the same engine in the Perplexity desktop app for Mac and Windows. It reads and writes folders you connect, operates native Mac apps such as Mail, Finder and Notes, takes voice commands and controls the Comet browser. On a Mac mini it can run around the clock, and you steer it from an iPhone. Perplexity says Personal Computer is a superset of the web product, so there is one record here for both. Local models on Apple silicon, AMD and NVIDIA hardware handle private steps without spending credits, and Portable Computer on NVIDIA hardware keeps whole tasks on your device.
It suits people who delegate knowledge work: analysts building competitor reports, founders who want morning briefings, and operators who live in email and documents. Compare it with Manus, ChatGPT Work, Gemini Spark and OpenAI dots on cloud delegation, or with OpenClaw and Hermes Agent if you prefer to run an agent yourself. Anyone who mostly asks questions is better served by plain search in Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini. For other personal agents, see also Muse, Cue and Grok Bot.
The honest caveat is cost control. Usage is metered in credits, a task's price is only known after it runs, and a large build can cost far more than a research note. Perplexity's help pages are also updated often, so allowances and availability change; some features, such as Brain memory, are still research previews and roll out gradually. Treat the first weeks as a test of how many credits your real jobs burn.
Pricing
Computer needs a paid plan and is not available on free accounts. Perplexity's pricing page lists Pro at $17 a month billed annually and Max at $167 a month billed annually. Credits are 100 per $1. Max includes 10,000 credits a month; consumer Pro has no monthly credits and instead includes weekly Computer usage that resets each week. Enterprise Pro includes 500 credits a month and Enterprise Max 15,000. New subscribers get a one-time bonus that expires in about 30 days: 4,000 credits on Pro and 35,000 on Max. See [Perplexity](/hub/tools/perplexity) for the search product.
Key Features
- Multi-model orchestration: Builds agent teams across 20+ frontier models and chooses the combination for each task without a manual picker.
- Scheduled and triggered work: Runs in the background on a schedule or on conditions such as new email, calendar changes or flight status.
- App connectors: Connects to hundreds of services including Gmail, Outlook, GitHub, Linear, Slack, Notion, Snowflake, Databricks and Salesforce.
- Personal Computer desktop app: Reads and writes connected local folders, controls native Mac apps and takes voice commands on Mac and Windows.
- Always-on Mac mini mode: On a Mac mini it keeps working with the laptop closed and can be paused or steered from an iPhone.
- Local and hybrid models: On Apple silicon with 24 GB or more of unified memory, Gemma 4 E4B, Qwen3.6 35B-A3B or the Perplexity model handle private steps, and local work uses no credits.
- Persistent memory and Brain: Keeps context across sessions, and Max subscribers can try Brain, a research-preview memory that links each claim to its source.
Strengths
- Perplexity says one prompt can chain research, analysis, a slide deck and an email, which saves the copy-and-paste between separate tools.
- Local models on supported hardware run private steps without spending credits, so file-heavy routine work can be free at the margin.
- Ask searches and Comet Assistant in Search mode never use credits, so the subscription stays useful without touching Computer.
- Paused tasks resume on their own when credits return, so running dry does not throw away finished work.
Weaknesses
- A task's cost is only clear after it runs, and a large app build can use many thousands of credits.
- Consumer Pro has no monthly credit pool, so heavy users on Pro depend on weekly included usage, purchased credits or an upgrade to Max.
- Installed-app control is not yet available on Windows, so the desktop experience is fuller on Mac.
- The best always-on setup wants a dedicated Mac mini, and local models need 24 GB or more of memory or video memory.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does Perplexity Computer cost in 2026?
You need a paid plan. The pricing page shows Pro at $17 a month and Max at $167 a month when billed annually, and press reports put monthly billing at $20 and $200. Credits cost 100 per $1: Max includes 10,000 a month, consumer Pro includes weekly usage rather than monthly credits, and Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max start at 500 and 15,000. Perplexity's examples run from 15 to 70 credits for a quick fact up to 15,000+ for building an app.
Does Perplexity Computer have a free plan?
No. Perplexity says Computer is not available on free accounts, although plain Ask searches stay free of credits. Auto-refill is off until you turn it on, so nothing is charged by surprise.
Which tools compete with Perplexity Computer in 2026?
[Manus](/hub/tools/manus) is the closest cloud rival for delegated multi-step work. [ChatGPT Work](/hub/agents/chatgpt-work) and [Gemini Spark](/hub/agents/gemini-spark) fit people who already work inside ChatGPT or Google Workspace. [OpenClaw](/hub/agents/openclaw) suits those who want to host an open agent themselves.
What separates Perplexity Computer from ChatGPT Work?
Perplexity Computer starts from cited search and routes each task across models from several vendors, while [ChatGPT Work](/hub/agents/chatgpt-work) runs on OpenAI models inside the ChatGPT account. Computer adds an always-on Mac mini mode and local models; neither vendor publishes agent benchmark scores, so the choice rests on ecosystem and billing, not test results.
How do you get started with Perplexity Computer?
Subscribe to a paid plan, open the Perplexity home page and select the Computer icon, then type a task into the Start a task field. For file access, download the desktop app from perplexity.ai/personal-computer (macOS 15 or later, or Windows 10 or 11) and connect a folder. Connect apps from Plugins in the sidebar when a task needs them.
