HokAI vs Toolify: What 30,501 Listings Cost You in Accuracy

Toolify's homepage claims 30,501 AI tools across 459 categories, updated daily by ChatGPT, and every listing we sampled on August 30, 2026 still carries a date from 2023.

That is not a small gap. HokAI's tools tab lists 466 tools, a fraction of Toolify's claimed catalog, and the wider directory adds 106 models, 45 agents, 16 skills, 11 services and 56 companies on top of that.

We picked three tools both sites list: Jasper, Synthesia and ElevenLabs. We read both pages the same day. Toolify's pages show no updated-date field at all, only when the listing was added, and price appears as a tag such as "Contact for Pricing," never as a number. For a reader with a real budget to commit this week, that is not doing the one job a directory exists to do.

What we checked, and how to repeat it

On August 30, 2026 we pulled HokAI's own public API for Jasper, Synthesia and ElevenLabs. We then opened the matching Toolify page for each in a live browser session the same afternoon and read every field on the page: the introduction line, the "Added on" date, the pricing tags, and the category chips.

We did the same for Toolify's homepage and its $99 submission page. Every fetch is dated below in the sources list, and every URL is public. The check costs nothing to repeat next week.

We are not claiming Toolify never updates a listing. We are reporting what three specific, still-live listings showed on one specific day, using the same pricing-recheck method an earlier piece in this series laid out.

The same three tools, two different date fields

Jasper's page on HokAI carries a "Checked 19 Aug 2026" badge and a real number: $59 a month for the Pro plan billed annually, or $69 month to month, with Business pricing starting near $99 per user. Toolify's Jasper page, opened the same day, reads "Added on: Mar 07 2023" and shows only tags: Freemium, Free Trial, Paid, Contact for Pricing. No dollar figure appears anywhere on it.

Three tools is a small sample, and we say so plainly: it is not proof that every one of Toolify's 30,501 listings is stale. It is proof that "updated daily" describes the catalog's discovery pipeline, not the individual page a reader actually lands on.

Where the 30,501 number comes from

Toolify's own description on Product Hunt explains the mechanism directly: "Using ChatGPT to identify whether the websites collected are AI and automatically classify them, auto-updated daily." That is a real, useful pipeline for finding new tools fast. It is a classification system, not an editorial recheck.

An independent review at GeniusFirms found the gap that leaves. Toolify's own ChatGPT listing still referenced a deprecated "GPT-4o mini" model and old Team-plan details after OpenAI had moved to Free, Go, Plus and Pro tiers. Its Claude listing was still labeled "Claude 2" with "Contact for Pricing" months after Anthropic published specific tier prices. The review's own words: "Daily automation can help identify and classify new websites, but it does not guarantee that every existing product page has been manually checked against current official documentation."

Listing on Toolify costs $99 as a one-time flat fee, with content generated by Toolify's own AI or written by the submitter, six or more dofollow backlinks, and what the page calls "Listing & Traffic Forever." GeniusFirms also reported that correcting an outdated listing later runs through a paid "coins" system, friction the review says discourages smaller teams from keeping their own page current.

A separate Product Hunt reviewer put it more bluntly, saying Toolify had "scraped my site, re-written my content" without permission.

How HokAI's own process differs, on the same public record

HokAI's editorial policy, the same one behind the verification pass on every listing, states plainly that the site is "independent and editor-curated" and reviews every listing. Pricing, model lists and ownership are re-verified against the vendor's own pages on a rolling schedule. Corrections happen in the open when something is wrong, with no paid system standing between a mistake and its fix.

Listing also requires a flat submission fee, and the same policy is explicit that scores and rankings are never for sale, a constraint Toolify does not carry: its separate "Advertise AI" tier sells homepage placement, top-of-category position and a newsletter mention for a recurring price. Smart Match draws its recommendations only from the reviewed set, not from the classification pipeline. That is the whole reason the set stays at 466 tools instead of 30,000.

Where Toolify wins

Toolify suits a reader Smart Match is not built for. Someone hunting a tool that launched an hour ago, before any editor could reach it, will find it on Toolify's ChatGPT-classified new-arrivals feed long before it turns up anywhere reviewed. A hobbyist browsing 459 categories for inspiration, rather than deciding a budget line this quarter, gets a genuinely bigger net: 30,501 listings against HokAI's 466 in the same tab.

Toolify's per-listing save counts and reviews, thin as they are on most pages we opened, still give a crowd signal HokAI does not attempt to replicate at this size. If the job is discovery at the edge of a fast-moving market, that scale is the right tool for it. It is not a defect to apologize for.

The turn: is this even a fair fight

The obvious rebuttal is that comparing freshness on a 466-tool set against a 30,501-tool set stacks the deck. A smaller list is mechanically easier to keep current, and a wider sample of Toolify's catalog than the three tools we checked might turn up plenty of recently touched pages among the stale ones we found. Both points are fair, and they are exactly why this piece names its sample size instead of hiding it.

They also do not make the comparison meaningless, because Google's August 2026 spam update, which began rolling out on August 18 and targets pages "produced at scale primarily to manipulate rankings rather than serve users," judges a catalog by whether it serves the reader, not by how it was assembled. A directory built by daily automated classification is measured against the same bar as one built by manual review. Scale was never going to be the metric that decided which bar a listing clears.

Why this matters more once an AI is the one reading the directory

The reader checking a price today might be a person. Increasingly it is an answer engine doing the checking on someone else's behalf, and that changes what "30,501 listings" is worth. Frase's own AEO research states that 38% of AI Overview citations come from pages that were already ranking in Google's top 10.

An engine choosing what to repeat is not scanning the widest catalog. It is preferring pages it already has reason to trust. A page with a dated Checked badge and a specific dollar figure gives an answer engine something to quote directly. A page with a tag that reads "Contact for Pricing" gives it nothing to cite, no matter which of the 30,501 it is.

What would change this verdict

A Toolify listing carrying a genuine last-checked date next to an actual price, shown on more than the three tools we happened to pick this time, would be the evidence that flips this piece. Until then, the honest read is the split one: pick the bigger net for discovery, and pick the smaller, dated, reviewed set for the number you are about to pay.
