Best for operations, finance and revenue teams that want a managed coworker doing multi-system admin without building integrations. It replaces a part-time operations hire or a brittle script-based bot, and a 14-day trial on one real workflow lets you judge finished work first. A poor fit for solo users or API-only automation.

Automat Workforce is a managed AI coworker, introduced as Ace on 30 September 2026. It has its own email, phone number, Mac and logins, takes requests over email, Slack, text, WhatsApp or phone, and completes multi-step office work through the screen in the tools a team already uses, maintained by Automat's engineers.

About Automat Workforce

Automat Workforce is the AI coworker product from Automat, a San Francisco company founded in 2023 by former Google engineers Lucas Ochoa and Gautam Bose and part of Y Combinator's Winter 2023 batch. The company has raised $19.25 million in total, including a $15.5 million Series A led by Felicis. Its coworker, called Ace, is an agent and not a chatbot: it holds an email address, a phone number, a Mac and a set of logins of its own, takes a request from a message or a call, and finishes the job inside the software your team already uses.

Ace works the way a new hire does. An admin invites it to Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, Slack or Teams and the CRM, it signs in as itself, then opens the browser, clicks through the screens and sends the email. Because it uses the same interface a person uses, it can reach internal tools and legacy portals that never shipped an API, which is the gap left open by API-first builders such as Zapier and n8n. Automat does not say which language models run under Ace.

Behind Ace sits the Automat platform, which builds workflows that mix fixed steps with model-driven steps so repeat jobs run cheaply and predictably. Automat's own engineers write the first playbooks, watch the queue and handle upgrades, which makes this closer to a managed service than a self-serve app. That is the main difference from Sola, which turns a screen recording into a bot and also sells by quote, and from MultiOn, which is aimed at one-off web tasks.

It suits operations, finance, revenue and hiring teams that lose their week to copy-and-paste work across several systems, and regulated lenders, insurers and banks that want an audit trail. Other always-on teammate products, such as xAI's Grok Bot, Meta's Muse and OpenAI's ChatGPT Work, ride on the vendor's own accounts and plans; our Grok Bot vs Meta Muse vs OpenAI Dots comparison covers that group. Automat instead sells a managed seat with a human team behind it, closer in spirit to Lindy, the AI teammate platform that connects through app integrations.

Ace was introduced in a founder note dated 30 September 2026, so independent reviews are thin and most outcome figures come from Automat's own case studies, which name ABB, T3 Sixty, Whipsaw and Amdahl as customers. Pricing

Workforce costs $1,800 per month billed annually ($21,600 a year), is meant for teams of 2 to 50, and has no per-seat pricing. The pricing page labels the annual view 10% off, so month-to-month billing costs more. The plan includes a dedicated Mac, an email address and a company account for Ace. Enterprise is custom-quoted for fully managed automations, with the hosted coworker as an add-on. The page lists no usage caps or overage rates.

Key Features

  • Its own identity and logins: Ace gets an email address, phone number, Mac and company account, so every message and edit is attributed to Ace and not to a human colleague.
  • Works through the screen, not an API: It opens a browser or desktop app, signs in and clicks through pages, which reaches legacy portals and SAP-style screens that expose no connector.
  • Reached the way you reach a coworker: Send it an email, a Slack mention, a text, a WhatsApp message or a document comment, or phone it; it can also place outbound calls to a venue or a candidate.
  • Approvals and a full audit trail: Customers choose which actions need sign-off, every run is logged with the steps taken and screens seen, and Ace can be paused or redirected at any point.
  • Handbook-driven behavior: Ace reads an uploaded handbook plus plain-language rules, such as a spend limit that needs a named manager's approval, and applies them to later work.
  • Workflow platform underneath: A visual and code workflow builder with scheduled and durable runs, session replay and document extraction, shared by the Workforce and Enterprise plans.
  • Managed by Automat: A named Automat team onboards Ace, writes the first playbooks and handles upgrades, so the customer manages priorities instead of infrastructure.
  • Security controls: SSO and SCIM through your identity provider, access granted one tool at a time, credentials kept in a password vault outside the model's context, and an annual SOC 2 Type II audit with the report under NDA.

Strengths

  • Vendor-reported ABB deployment: 16,200+ work items automated across engineering, sales operations, logistics and billing, with about one FTE-year of capacity returned.
  • Priced per coworker rather than per seat, so extra teammates who message Ace add no cost.
  • IT can govern Ace with the same org units, mail quarantine and sharing rules it already uses for people, and disable the account when the work ends.
  • Handles systems with no API: the ABB case study describes it working inside SAP screens where script-based bots had broken on every update.

Weaknesses

  • A managed seat is a poor fit for a solo founder or a team with a few automated tasks a week; self-serve builders such as Zapier and n8n let you start smaller.
  • The underlying language models are not named and no standard agent benchmark such as GAIA or WebArena is published, so accuracy has to be judged in the free trial.
  • Expect tuning time: in ABB's drawing-extraction program the vendor reports accuracy rising from 37% to 100% between June 2025 and February 2026 as engineers fed corrections back.
  • It launched in September 2026, so there are no independent reviews yet and nearly every outcome figure comes from Automat's own case studies.
  • Ace holds real logins and can send mail and place calls under its own name, so a mis-scoped permission has outside consequences and approval rules need writing before it starts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Automat Workforce cost in 2026?

Workforce is $1,800 a month when billed annually ($21,600 a year) for teams of 2 to 50, with no per-seat charge, and it covers a dedicated Mac, email address and company account for Ace. Monthly billing is also offered at a higher rate. Enterprise is quoted case by case for fully managed automations, and on that plan the hosted coworker is a paid add-on.

Is Automat Workforce free to use?

No, there is no free plan. Automat offers a 14-day trial that starts on one workflow already important to your team and runs it end to end, so you judge finished work rather than a demo. The pricing page does not say whether a card is needed or what limits apply, so confirm both when you book.

Which tools compete with Automat Workforce in 2026?

Choose [Sola](/hub/agents/sola) for quote-based bots built from a screen recording, [MultiOn](/hub/agents/multion) for single web tasks, and [Zapier](/hub/tools/zapier) or [n8n](/hub/tools/n8n) when every system you use exposes an API. [Lindy](/hub/tools/lindy) is the closest teammate-style rival, while [ChatGPT Work](/hub/agents/chatgpt-work) fits teams that want an agent inside a ChatGPT plan they already hold.

Automat Workforce or Grok Bot: which should you pick?

Grok Bot is in beta and ships with eligible xAI plans on its own usage allowance, per the vendor, so it costs little to try if you already pay for Grok. Automat Workforce is a paid managed seat with a phone number of its own, a SOC 2 report and engineers on call. Pick Grok Bot to experiment; pick Automat when regulated workflows and a human team behind the agent matter more than price.

How long does it take to get going with Automat Workforce?

Book a demo or start the trial from the Workforce page and name one recurring workflow. Automat's team sets Ace up, invites it to your mail, chat and CRM accounts and writes the first playbook with you. After that you message Ace like a colleague, set approval rules in its handbook and review the activity log. The vendor says Ace appears in your workspace on the day you onboard it.
