ChatGPT Ads Explained (2026): Which Plans Show Them and How to Avoid Them
As of 10 October 2026, OpenAI shows labelled ads below ChatGPT responses to eligible Free and Go users in test regions. Paid tiers from Plus upward carry none. A visual ad format for generated images was announced on 5 October for a US test later in the month, and is not yet live.
The short version
ChatGPT ads appear on the Free and Go plans and nowhere on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu. They sit below answers, labelled sponsored, and OpenAI says they do not change replies. You can avoid them by upgrading, choosing the Ads-Free Free option with lower limits, or using Temporary Chat.
OpenAI said on 5 October 2026 that ChatGPT will start showing visual ads next to the images it generates, in the United States only, later this month.
The new format is the smaller story. The larger one is what it confirms: ads in ChatGPT are no longer a side experiment. They have a self-serve buying tool, a long list of measurement partners and now a second ad format, and they sit on the plans most people actually use. If you are on Free or Go, you are the audience. If you pay for Plus or Pro, you are not.
This guide answers the questions people type into search: does free ChatGPT have ads, which plans show them, what they look like, whether they change the answers, and how to get rid of them. The rules below come from OpenAI's own help center, which we read on 10 October 2026. Where a point rests only on press coverage, we say so.
What changed: ads gained a second format this week
According to OpenAI's help center, ad testing began in the United States on 9 February 2026, with a gradual rollout to eligible Free and Go users in select regions. TechCrunch reported that ads expanded to India in August. Until now every ad has been a unit shown below a text response.
The 5 October announcement adds visual display ads that appear alongside generated images. TechCrunch's report gives four details. The ads arrive later in October. They start in the US only. They come from an initial test group of advertisers. They are labelled, and OpenAI says they will not influence the answers ChatGPT gives.
Two things here are announced, not live. OpenAI has given no start date beyond "later this month", and the help article we read, which its page marked as updated 11 days earlier, still describes only ads below a response. We did not see an image ad on any account, so we cannot show you one.
OpenAI also widened the machinery behind the ads. TechCrunch lists click-attribution partners such as AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch and Kochava, three geo-experiment partners, and brand-suitability pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science. That is the toolkit of an advertising business that expects to grow. It is also the audience figure OpenAI is selling: TechCrunch cites 1.2 billion weekly users for ChatGPT, a number advertisers will reach only once ads roll out globally.
Who it affects: Free and Go carry ads, every higher plan does not
OpenAI states the rule in one sentence. Ads may appear for users on the Free and Go plans, and Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts will not have ads. The word "may" matters, because eligibility also depends on where you live and whether you are in the test.
| Plan | Ads? | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Yes, or opt out | Ads-Free option has lower limits |
| Go | Yes | No Ads-Free option on Go |
| Plus | No | Paid, ad-free |
| Pro | No | Paid, ad-free |
| Business, Enterprise, Edu | No | Work and school accounts |
| Accounts under 18 | No | By stated age or age prediction |
Prices and limits for each plan are in our ChatGPT plans comparison, so we do not repeat them here. Go is the low-cost tier: Storyboard18 reported that it costs $8 a month in the US and rolled out globally in mid-January 2026. What matters for this question is that the line sits between Go and Plus. A paid plan does not automatically mean no ads.
Logging out does not escape them. OpenAI says ads shown in logged-out experiences are appropriate for all audiences, while mature-content ads are limited to eligible logged-in users.
Region is the other filter. The help article says ad controls appear only for Free and Go users in regions where ads are available or will soon be. Personalized ads are not initially available in the European Economic Area or Switzerland. If you open Settings and find no Ads controls, you are most likely outside the test today.
How far the test has spread is harder to pin down. Notebookcheck's August review of OpenAI's Ads Manager Availability page found seven countries live as of 6 August: Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. Brazil and Mexico still read "Coming Soon" despite a 7 May promise of expansion within weeks. That list covers where advertisers can buy, not where users see ads, and the page has probably moved since. We could not confirm today's user-side country list.
What ChatGPT ads look like and where they appear
OpenAI says ads can appear below the end of a response, clearly labelled as sponsored and visually separated from the answer. During the test you may see one or more ad units under a reply when there is a relevant match to your chat. A unit can carry items from one advertiser or from several.
| Surface | Ads shown? |
|---|---|
| Below a text response | Yes, labelled sponsored |
| Inside the answer text | No, per OpenAI |
| Temporary Chat | No |
| ChatGPT Atlas browser | No, during this test |
| Near health, mental health or politics | No |
| Generated images | Announced for US, later in October |
Each ad has a three-dot menu with 4 actions: Hide ad, Report ad, About this ad, and Ask ChatGPT. The last one shares that specific ad with the assistant, because by default ChatGPT cannot see the ads shown to you.
Sensitive topics get a carve-out. Ads are not eligible to appear near personal health, mental health or politics, and political advertising is not allowed. Advertisers in regulated verticals such as health and financial services can still buy ads if they meet OpenAI's eligibility criteria, but their ads do not run next to sensitive conversations.
If you use ChatGPT to shop, keep two things apart. Product suggestions inside the answer are covered in our ChatGPT shopping guide. The labelled units below the answer are the ads this guide covers, and OpenAI says they are paid placements.
Do ads change what ChatGPT tells you?
OpenAI says no. Its help article states that ads run on separate systems from the chat model, and that advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter ChatGPT's responses. It adds that seeing an ad does not mean OpenAI endorses the advertiser.
We cannot test that claim from outside, and neither can you. What you can check is the structure: the ad sits below the answer, carries a label, and the answer text is the same whether or not an ad follows. Whether the ranking of what you see, or the memory ChatGPT keeps about you, shifts over time is not something a reader can audit.
A competitor has argued the opposite case. In a 4 February 2026 post, Anthropic wrote that "Claude will remain ad-free" and that an ad-based system could create incentives that work against being helpful. Read that as a position from a company that sells a rival product, not as evidence about how ChatGPT behaves.
It is still a useful statement of the risk, and it is the reason some buyers weigh ad policy at all. Anthropic also ran Super Bowl commercials mocking ads inside AI answers in February 2026, and Storyboard18 reported that OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman called them dishonest. The dispute is a marketing fight as much as a technical one.
The data angle: what ChatGPT uses to pick an ad, and what advertisers see
OpenAI says its ads system selects ads on expected relevance and outcomes. If several ads qualify, it weighs a mix of factors that includes relevance and advertiser bids. The signals, per the help article, are:
- the context and intent of your current conversation
- your general location and language
- the ad's landing page, title and copy
- advertiser-provided context hints and targeting choices
- if personalization is on (an option that OpenAI says applies from February 2026), select signals from your wider ChatGPT use, including past chats and memory, and how you interact with ads
Advertisers get a narrower view. OpenAI says they receive aggregated reporting such as total views and clicks, and that they never receive your chats, chat history, memories, name, email, precise location or IP address. If you choose to message an advertiser through an ad, that advertiser sees what you send them and nothing else.
Two details in the fine print change what "off" means. Turning personalization off does not remove ads, it makes them rely on your current thread alone. And deleting your ads data stops it being used to show you ads, but removal from OpenAI's servers can take up to 30 days.
One more edge case: clicking, hiding or reporting an ad does not feed your ChatGPT memory. But if you use Ask ChatGPT on an ad and talk about it, that conversation can be referenced in later chats when "reference chat history" is switched on.
What to do about it: five ways to avoid or reduce ads
Which fix you pick depends on whether you want zero ads or just fewer, tailored ones.
- Switch a Free account to Ads-Free. Open Settings, choose Ads controls, tap Change plan to go ad-free, pick Reduce message limits and confirm. It costs nothing.
- Upgrade to Plus or Pro. Both are ad-free without the reduced limits that come with Ads-Free.
- Turn off personalization and past-chat use. This changes how ads are chosen. It does not remove them.
- Use Temporary Chat. OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not show ads.
- Hide or report single ads from the three-dot menu.
| Option | Removes ads? | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| Ads-Free on Free | Yes | Lower limits, fewer tools |
| Plus or Pro | Yes | A paid subscription |
| Personalization off | No | Less tailored ads |
| Temporary Chat | Yes, in that chat | Memory is not used |
| Hide ad | That one ad | Nothing |
The Ads-Free option has a price in features. OpenAI says it means fewer messages per day and no access to some tools, for example image generation or deep research. A hit on the limit shows a banner with 2 choices: upgrade, or Show ads, which switches you back.
Go users have a catch. Ads-Free is a Free-plan option, so a Go subscriber has to drop back to Free or move up to a plan that is already ad-free. For the plan-by-plan trade, see the plans guide.
Here is our reading of how the image-ad test fits. Because Ads-Free removes image generation, the people who see image ads will mostly be those who kept the ad-supported plan and use the tool. OpenAI has not said this, and the help article does not cover image ads yet, so treat it as inference.
Do other assistants run ads? Claude says no, and we could not confirm the rest
On the evidence we read, Claude is the one major assistant that has promised no ads. Anthropic's post of 4 February 2026 says users will not see sponsored links next to conversations, and that Claude's answers will not be shaped by advertisers or include product placements nobody asked for. Our guide to what Claude is for and the Claude model chooser cover the product itself.
For Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Grok, Meta AI, Poe and ByteDance's Doubao, we did not verify a current ad policy from the vendors' own pages in this run. Several marketing blogs make claims about them, but those posts are not primary sources, so we left them out. Check each vendor's help center before you decide on that basis. Android owners weighing Gemini against ChatGPT can start with our Android assistant comparison.
If ad policy is one input among several, the best AI chatbots roundup scores the main assistants on job fit and price. The assistant selection guide works through the same choice by use case, and our ChatGPT vs Grok piece covers the trust angle on that pairing. You can also browse every option in the AI chatbots directory, or describe your needs to Smart Match and let it filter by what you will pay and put up with.
Where staying on the ad-supported plan wins
Avoiding ads is not automatically the right move. The case for keeping them is stronger than it first looks.
OpenAI says the Free and Go plans need significant infrastructure spending, and that ads help support broader access. If you ask ChatGPT a handful of questions a day, the kind of jobs in our ChatGPT use-cases guide, an ad below a labelled reply costs you a second of attention. The alternative, Ads-Free, trades that for fewer messages and no image generation or deep research. Paying for Plus or Pro to remove an ad you rarely notice is a poor purchase unless you need the higher limits anyway.
Sensitive conversations are also fenced off. Health, mental health and political chats do not get ads, and Temporary Chat gives you a clean room for anything you want kept apart. For many casual users, the controls in Settings are enough: switch off personalization, switch off past-chat use, and the ads you see depend only on the thread in front of you.
The real cost is privacy at the margin, not annoyance. If you leave personalization on, memory and past chats can inform the ads you are shown. Decide on that, not on the label.
What advertisers get, and what OpenAI does not publish about pricing
The advertiser side is a beta product. OpenAI's Ads Manager Beta lets teams build campaigns through a guided workflow or in bulk by CSV upload, though CSV upload does not yet support product-feed campaigns. Reporting covers impressions, clicks and click-through rate, refreshed about every 15 minutes. Spend figures can lag by 7 to 8 hours, so a temporary zero does not mean no charges accrued.
Businesses sign up at ads.openai.com. The help center says that where Ads Manager is not yet available, you can create an account and OpenAI will notify you when your country is supported; creating the account does not grant earlier access.
We found no list prices, bid guidance or minimum spend on the OpenAI pages we read. Third-party sites quote CPM and CPC figures, but none of them is OpenAI, so we do not repeat them. What OpenAI does say is that ranking weighs relevance and advertiser bids, which means price will be set by auction rather than a rate card.
If you are weighing ChatGPT against the channels you already buy, the work around the placement is familiar. Arcads builds UGC-style talking-actor video ads in 35 voice languages. Katalist takes ad teams from script to storyboard to video. SpyTrend searches more than 1.1 billion indexed Meta and TikTok ads, which is the research step before you brief any creative. Those figures come from each tool's own listing; none of them is a ChatGPT ads product, and OpenAI has not said what creative specs the new image format will need.
What would flip the verdict, and what comes next
Three things would change the picture.
- The image-ad start date. OpenAI said "later this month". When the test begins, the help center should add the format, and you will know it is live.
- A change to which plans carry ads. OpenAI's stated principle is that it will always offer a way to avoid ads. That includes ad-free paid tiers and a free no-ads option with extra limits. Ads on Plus would break the first half of that line.
- Wider regions. The help page says availability will expand as testing grows. Personalized ads are held back in the EEA and Switzerland for now.
Our verdict stands unless one of those moves. Free and Go show ads, Plus and Pro do not, the answer text is kept separate, and the cleanest exits are Ads-Free for people who can live with lower limits and a paid plan for people who cannot.
The earliest useful test comes the week image ads start. Open Settings, then Ads controls, and see whether Ads-Free still removes image generation. If it does, the people who see image ads will be exactly the people who chose to keep the tool.
Frequently asked questions
Does free ChatGPT have ads?
Yes, for eligible users in regions where OpenAI is testing ads. The help center says ads may appear on the Free and Go plans. Testing began in the United States on 9 February 2026. If you do not see Ads controls in Settings, you are probably outside the test.
Which ChatGPT plans show ads?
Free and Go. OpenAI says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts will not have ads, and that accounts identified as under 18 do not see them either. Temporary Chats and the ChatGPT Atlas browser also show no ads during the test.
Do ads change ChatGPT's answers?
OpenAI says no. It states that ads run on separate systems from the chat model and that advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter responses. Ads appear below the answer, labelled sponsored. The claim comes from OpenAI itself and cannot be audited from outside.
How do I turn ads off in ChatGPT?
On a Free account, open Settings, then Ads controls, then Change plan to go ad-free, and choose Reduce message limits. This removes ads but lowers limits and drops tools such as image generation and deep research. Upgrading to Plus or Pro also removes ads without those limits.
When do ChatGPT image ads start?
OpenAI announced on 5 October 2026 that visual ads will appear alongside generated images in a US-only test later in October. TechCrunch reports they will be labelled and will start with an initial group of advertisers. We found no confirmed start date.
