Spline offers 4 selectable AI engines for text-to-3D and image-to-3D inside a collaborative design editor that runs in the browser and as Mac and Windows desktop apps. Scenes carry physics, timeline animation and live data, and export to the web, iOS and Android. A bundled MCP server lets coding agents edit open scenes.
About Spline
Spline is a collaborative 3D and 2D design platform from Spline, Inc., which Alejandro León founded in 2020. The company went through Y Combinator's Winter 2021 batch and announced a $10 million Series A on August 13, 2024, led by Third Point Ventures, alongside Android export support. Its pitch is that a designer can build an interactive 3D object and ship it to a website or app without learning a game engine such as Unity or Unreal.
In practice it sits next to the tools a web team already runs. A product page built in Framer, which our website design roundup weighs against other builders, can hold a Spline scene as an embed, and interface work that would otherwise live in Figma can be drawn in Hana, Spline's own 2D canvas. Spline does not replace either one for large design systems or full site publishing, so its realistic role is the single 3D hero, product viewer or interactive logo that those tools cannot produce natively.
The AI layer is the newest part. Text-to-3D and image-to-3D run on a choice of engines, with Hunyuan3D, the Tencent model family covered in our Hunyuan 3D record, as the default and Meshy offered for cleaner meshes. Standalone services such as Rodin do the same generation job without a scene editor around it. The desktop app also bundles a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, so Claude Code, the Claude desktop app and Cursor can create and edit scenes while the canvas updates live. It also registers with the ChatGPT desktop app, and Windsurf can be connected with a one-time manual setup.
Check three limits before paying. AI 3D generation is a paid feature that runs on monthly credits, and the free plan puts a watermark on web exports. The MCP server works only through the Mac or Windows desktop app, never from a browser tab. And Spline's terms treat payments as non-refundable unless it decides otherwise, so run your real scene through the free plan first. Spline's own documentation also warns that scenes holding several generated meshes can slow down, because those models carry more detail than hand-built ones. Browse the wider media generation category to see how the generation side compares.

Key Features
- Real-time 3D editor: Build scenes from primitives and polygon modeling, then add layer-based materials, physics, particles and timeline animation in a browser tab or the desktop app.
- Hana 2D design canvas: A second editor in the same app for interface and motion design, with an infinite canvas, frames with auto layout, vector networks and its own AI agent.
- AI 3D generation: Turns text, an image or both into a 3D model on a choice of four engines (Hunyuan3D, Hunyuan 3.1 Pro, Trellis 2 and Meshy), and shows an estimated credit cost before you send.
- Built-in MCP server: The desktop app registers a Model Context Protocol server with Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code, Antigravity and ChatGPT, so an agent can create and edit 3D scenes and Hana designs; it runs on the local machine only.
- Variables, APIs and webhooks: Scenes can read live data through variables, API calls and per-scene webhook URLs, so a 3D object can change in response to data or AI output.
- Multi-platform export: Publish to the web with an embed or the spline-viewer component, to React and Next.js, and to iOS and Android through Swift and Kotlin; a separate Spline Mirror app views designs on visionOS.
- Security and compliance: Spline reports SOC 2 Type 1 and Type 2 reports and ISO 27001 certification, and states GDPR compliance, on its security page, with SAML single sign-on and 2FA for Enterprise; audit documents are released by request through its Trust Center.
Pros
- Covers 3D, 2D interface design and AI generation under one login and one file library, so a team does not stitch a modeller, a UI tool and a generator together for a single hero asset.
- The MCP route edits the live open document instead of exporting files back and forth, and Spline publishes an optional Agent Skill that teaches clients when to build in Spline.
- Viewing is free for everyone: a shared scene opens without a seat, so paid seats only cover the people who edit.
- Product Hunt users rate it 4.6 out of 5 across 31 reviews (read in October 2026).
Cons
- Every AI action spends credits from a pooled monthly allowance, and one finished model costs credits for both the image previews and the mesh, so heavy generation can outrun a plan.
- Payments are non-refundable unless Spline decides otherwise, with no partial refund for unused time, so a wrong-fit purchase is lost money.
- The MCP server runs only inside the desktop app, which exists for Mac and Windows, so browser-only users cannot connect an agent.
- Independent review coverage is thin: G2 shows no reviews for Spline and Trustpilot shows a single one, which leaves Product Hunt as the only sizeable public rating.
Data Handling
- Training-data policy
- Spline states it collects AI prompt data only when a user chooses to share it as feedback.
- Compliance
- SOC 2 Type 1 and Type 2 · ISO 27001 · GDPR (vendor statement)
Frequently Asked Questions
What do Spline's plans and AI credits cost?
Spline charges per seat. Hobby is $15 a month, or $12 when billed yearly, Pro is $30 or $25, and Max is $70 or $60. Hobby, Pro and Max include a shared pool of 2,000, 3,000 and 10,000 AI credits a month, and Enterprise is quoted individually. Cancelling keeps the plan active to the end of the paid cycle, with no partial refund for unused time.
What can you do on Spline's free plan?
The $0 plan allows limited personal files, unlimited file viewers and access to the Spline Library, and it stamps a watermark on web exports. AI 3D generation is not part of it, because Spline treats generation as a paid feature funded by monthly credits.
Which 3D and design tools are closest to Spline?
Figma is the usual pick for flat interface work, and Spline's own Hana canvas is the in-app alternative. Framer fits when you want to design, host and publish a whole site around a 3D embed. If you only need models from text or photos, Rodin or the open-weight Hunyuan 3D produce meshes without a scene editor.
Spline or Figma: which fits a 3D hero asset?
Spline for the 3D hero asset, Figma for shared design systems and product screens. Spline is built for interactive 3D and motion that a flat canvas cannot render, while Hana overlaps with Figma for interface design. A team with a deep Figma library will more likely add Spline for that one asset than move everything over.
Can you control Spline from Claude Code or Cursor, and how do you start?
Yes. Install the Mac or Windows desktop app and open it once, and it adds its MCP server to supported clients automatically, including Claude Code and Cursor. Restart the client so it loads the server, then ask for a scene. Without an agent, the quickest first result is remixing a community or library file in the browser, and publishing gives an embed snippet for the web, React or Next.js.
Top Alternatives
- Figma: Pick Figma if the work is flat product UI and shared design systems; pick Spline when a scene needs depth, physics or live data.
- Framer: Pick Framer if you must design, host and publish an entire site; pick Spline for the 3D scene that sits inside it.
- Rodin: Pick Rodin if you only want textured meshes for Blender, Unity or Unreal; pick Spline if the model must then be animated and published as an interactive scene.
- Hunyuan 3D: Pick Hunyuan 3D directly if you want open-weight models to run yourself; pick Spline to use Hunyuan3D as one engine inside an editor.
