Microsoft says 90% of the Fortune 500 has used Copilot Studio, its no-code platform for building custom AI agents, workflows and apps. It lists 1,500+ pre-built connectors plus MCP servers, publishes agents to Teams, web and Microsoft 365 Copilot, and bills usage in Copilot Credits through Azure pay-as-you-go or prepaid plans.

About Microsoft Copilot Studio

Microsoft Copilot Studio is Microsoft's no-code builder for custom AI agents, workflows and apps, aimed at IT teams and business makers. It is a separate product from Microsoft Copilot, the assistant people chat with; Copilot Studio is where a team builds and governs its own agents, which can then run inside Copilot, Teams, SharePoint or a website. It is made by Microsoft.

You assemble an agent from instructions, knowledge sources and actions. Actions come from Power Platform connectors (Microsoft lists 1,500+ pre-built data connectors), MCP servers and Work IQ, and the agent can be conversational, voice-based or autonomous, planning and escalating work items on its own. Multi-agent orchestration routes a task to the right specialist agent, including agents from partner providers. Model choice covers default models, custom models and the 11K+ models Microsoft lists through Azure AI Foundry, and built-in evaluations replace ad hoc spot checks.

The closest alternatives are workflow and agent builders such as n8n, Lindy, Zapier, Make and CrewAI. Copilot Studio fits best where the company already runs Microsoft 365, Entra ID and Purview, because identity, DLP and audit logging reuse that stack. Teams outside Microsoft's stack usually get more flexibility, and often a simpler price, from the open or self-hostable options.

Billing runs on Copilot Credits, the common currency that replaced messages on September 1, 2025. You can buy credits through Azure pay-as-you-go, a one-year prepurchase plan (Microsoft says up to 20% off) or prepaid credit packs. A Microsoft 365 Copilot licence includes agent capabilities when agents run in Copilot, Teams or SharePoint, and Microsoft zero-rates classic and generative answers there. A trial licence lets one person build and test agents but not publish them.

Governance is a selling point: environment groups and role-based access fence experimental agents off from production, dev-test-prod release pipelines carry approval gates, and agent events flow into Microsoft Purview audit logs. Microsoft states that data residency alignment and major compliance standards are supported. October 2026 preview features were not confirmed on a Microsoft page when this record was written, so none are described here.

Pricing

Usage is charged in Copilot Credits: pay as you go on an Azure subscription, commit to a prepaid plan, or buy credit packs. A Copilot licence covers agents used inside Copilot, Teams and SharePoint. The trial licence cannot publish agents.

Per-credit dollar rates were not readable on Microsoft's public pages at the last check.

Key Features

  • No-code agent builder: Build conversational, voice and autonomous agents plus workflows and apps in one studio.
  • Connectors and MCP: Agents reach company data and apps through prebuilt connectors, MCP servers and Work IQ.
  • Model choice: Choose a default model, bring a custom one, or select from the Azure AI Foundry catalogue.
  • Multi-agent orchestration: Route complex tasks between specialist agents, including agents from partner providers.
  • Evaluations and analytics: Run structured automated tests and review real-time performance analytics per agent.
  • Lifecycle governance: Dev-test-prod pipelines with version control and approval gates, plus audit logs sent to Microsoft Purview.

Pros

  • Pre-built data connectors mean most business systems connect without custom code.
  • Identity, conditional access and Purview audit logs reuse an existing Entra setup.
  • Agents publish to Teams, websites and Microsoft 365 Copilot from one build.
  • Pay-as-you-go through Azure means no licence commitment to start.

Cons

  • Credit consumption depends on task complexity, so monthly cost is hard to forecast without Microsoft's usage estimator.
  • Unused credits do not carry over to the next month under capacity enforcement.
  • A trial licence cannot publish agents, so real testing needs an Azure subscription or purchased credits.
  • Fit is strongest inside the Microsoft stack; teams on Google Workspace or open tooling get less from the governance features.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Copilot Studio billed?

Usage is metered in Copilot Credits, which replaced messages on September 1, 2025. Microsoft sells them through Azure pay-as-you-go, a one-year prepurchase plan with up to 20% savings, or prepaid credit packs. HokAI could not read the per-credit dollar rates from Microsoft's public pages, so check the Microsoft pricing page and usage estimator for current figures.

Is Copilot Studio free?

Not for production use. A trial licence lets one person build agents and test them in the chat panel but not publish them. Free Azure sign-up offers a $200 credit that Microsoft says can be used to create agents. Published agents consume credits unless they run inside Microsoft 365 Copilot with a licensed user and only use classic or generative answers.

What are the best alternatives to Copilot Studio?

Choose n8n if you want self-hosting and open workflow code. Choose Lindy for quick business-assistant agents with less setup. Choose Zapier or Make when most of the work is app-to-app automation with only light AI steps. Copilot Studio wins when Entra, Purview and Teams already run the company.

How does Copilot Studio differ from Microsoft Copilot?

Microsoft Copilot is the assistant employees chat with. Copilot Studio is the builder admins and makers use to create custom agents, connect them to data and publish them to channels, including into Copilot itself. A Microsoft 365 Copilot licence covers agent use inside Microsoft apps; building and publishing elsewhere is billed through credits.

How do you start building an agent in Copilot Studio?

Sign in with a work account, get a Copilot Studio licence assigned by an admin or start a trial, and create an agent from a description. Add knowledge sources and connectors, test it in the chat panel, then publish to Teams, a website or other channels. Publishing requires an Azure subscription for pay-as-you-go billing or purchased credits.

Top Alternatives

  • n8n: Pick n8n if you want self-hosted workflows with full code control.
  • Lindy: Pick Lindy if you want ready-made business assistants with less admin setup.
  • Zapier: Pick Zapier when the job is app-to-app automation with light AI steps.
  • Make: Pick Make for visual automations billed per operation instead of per credit.
