SendGrid makes sense if you already run on Twilio or send millions of emails across transactional and marketing streams. It replaces juggling separate vendors for app mail and campaigns. For a small agent it is a hard sell: the free option is a trial, and activity logs last a week at most without an add-on.

SendGrid is Twilio's email API and SMTP relay, which Twilio says delivers more than 200 billion emails a month. It sends transactional and marketing mail, exposes delivery events through a signed webhook, and posts parsed incoming mail to your server through its Inbound Parse webhook, without storing conversations as an inbox.
About SendGrid
SendGrid is the email API and SMTP relay owned by Twilio, which completed its acquisition on 1 February 2019 in a transaction it valued at roughly $3 billion. The SendGrid website has since been folded into twilio.com, and Twilio puts the platform's monthly volume in the hundreds of billions of messages. It covers both transactional mail sent from code and marketing campaigns built in a visual editor, under one account.
Its strengths are scale and the surrounding Twilio platform. Pro and Premier plans include dedicated IP addresses with automated warm-up and IP pools, subusers let an agency or platform split sending and statistics per client, and an Email Address Validation API checks addresses before you spend reputation on them. Email can also sit on the same contract as Twilio messaging products.
For AI agents, SendGrid is a sender with an inbound hook, not an inbox. The Inbound Parse webhook posts the contents and attachments of incoming mail to your URL, and storing or threading the conversation is up to you. Twilio publishes an alpha MCP server for its public APIs, but we could not confirm from its documentation that it covers SendGrid's mail endpoints. Builders who want stored threads should look at AgentMail, which sells inboxes as its core unit, while Resend added threaded Inboxes beside its sender in October 2026. Teams that only send can weigh it against the stricter delivery focus of Postmark; on per-message cost, Amazon SES undercuts all three.
The main changes for new users are on the free side and in logs. The old permanent free plan has become a time-limited trial, and searchable email activity is kept for a few days on the lower plans unless you buy extended history. If you are choosing a sending tool for cold outreach rather than app mail, that is a different category; our comparison of Instantly, Smartlead and lemlist covers it.

Key Features
- Inbound Parse webhook: Parses the contents and attachments of incoming mail and posts them to your endpoint, for two-way conversations or replies with uploads.
- Event webhook: Streams delivery, open, click and bounce events to your server, secured with signed requests or OAuth 2.0.
- Dedicated IP pools: Pro and Premier include dedicated IPs with automated warm-up, and pools group several IPs for different traffic.
- Email Address Validation API: Checks an address in real time before you send, to protect sending reputation from typos and dead mailboxes.
- Subuser management: Splits sending, permissions, credit limits and statistics per subuser, available on Pro and Premier.
- Client libraries: Official libraries cover Node.js, Ruby, Python, Go, PHP, Java and C#, plus a setup guide with snippets in each.
Strengths
- Twilio's scale and dedicated IP tooling suit senders moving millions of messages a month.
- Teams already billed by Twilio for SMS or voice can add email without onboarding another vendor.
- Transactional and marketing email live in one account, which smaller specialists split across products.
Weaknesses
- There is no permanent free plan any more, only a trial that ends after 60 days.
- Email activity search covers 3 days on Essentials and 7 on Pro unless you pay for extended history.
- No stored inbox or threads for agents, and no SendGrid-specific official MCP server that we could confirm.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are SendGrid's pricing plans in 2026?
Essentials starts at $19.95 a month and Pro at $89.95 a month, the latter covering volumes up to 2.5 million with dedicated IPs included, and Premier is quoted, per Twilio's Email API pricing page on 6 November 2026. Marketing Campaigns are a separate product with their own pricing. Extended activity history beyond the plan's default is an extra purchase.
Does SendGrid still have a free plan?
Not a permanent one. New accounts get a free trial that sends up to 100 emails a day for 60 days with no credit card, after which you need a paid plan to keep sending. That is enough to wire up and test an agent, but not to run one for free.
Which tools compete with SendGrid in 2026?
Postmark competes on careful transactional delivery and keeps a free developer plan. Amazon SES competes on price for teams comfortable inside AWS. Resend and AgentMail compete for AI agent builders, because both now store threaded inboxes that SendGrid leaves to you.
What separates SendGrid from Amazon SES?
SendGrid sells a finished product: dashboard, marketing editor, validation API, subusers and support, starting at $19.95 a month. Amazon SES is a metered building block at cents per thousand messages, where receiving means writing receipt rules that drop mail into S3, SNS or Lambda. Pick SendGrid if engineering time is scarce; pick SES if the bill is.
How long does it take to get going with SendGrid?
Sign up for the trial without a card, authenticate your sending domain with the SPF and DKIM records SendGrid generates, and create an API key to send from one of the official libraries. Receiving is configured separately through the Inbound Parse webhook, which posts each parsed message to a URL on your server. The trial clock runs from sign-up, so test inbound handling early.

- AgentMail: Pick SendGrid for outbound at scale; pick AgentMail when agents need inboxes they can read.
