Doubao Phone Assistant review, pricing and limits

Built for buyers in China who want a phone that runs errands across apps, such as price comparison. Expect gaps: by mid-October 2026 more than 150 apps had declined its screen control, including WeChat and Taobao. Treat it as an early look at agent phones, not a replacement for doing things yourself.

Doubao Phone Assistant is ByteDance's phone-level AI agent. It reads the screen and taps through other apps on your behalf, and stops before payments. A technical preview shipped on 1 December 2025 on the nubia M153; the consumer version launched on 14 September 2026 on the nubia NaviX Ultra, sold in China only.

About Doubao Phone Assistant

ByteDance built Doubao Phone Assistant into a phone's operating system rather than shipping it as an app you install. It comes from the team behind Doubao, the chatbot from ByteDance, working with handset makers who grant system permissions. ByteDance has said it does not plan to build phones itself, so the software ships on partner hardware: first the nubia M153 engineering prototype, made with ZTE, then the nubia NaviX Ultra. What makes it an agent rather than a chatbot is that it presses buttons in other apps on your behalf instead of only answering questions.

Wake-up options are a spoken command, a hardware key and ByteDance's own earbuds, and then you give it a task such as comparing the price of a product across shopping apps and ordering the cheapest one. It reads the screen and simulates taps, which ByteDance calls a GUI agent. A second mode, Operate Phone Pro, pulls in stored memory (switched on by you) and system tools directly, so a request can use details you saved earlier. It hands payment and other sensitive steps back to you, the kind of checkpoint covered in AI Agent Approval, and ByteDance says its demo videos were recorded for real but cannot be guaranteed to repeat every time. The screen-tapping path is labeled Beta, while the preferred path is a standard interface (MCP, the Model Context Protocol) that apps open on purpose; only three third-party apps, including Caocao Chuxing and Qishui Music, offered one at the 16 September 2026 launch event.

The friction is with the apps it wants to operate. After the December 2025 launch, WeChat login behaved oddly, Taobao asked for human verification and some banking apps stopped logins as a risk measure. ByteDance then removed WeChat control and limited three scenarios: score farming, financial apps and competitive games. On 25 September 2026 it apologized to Tencent players who were logged out of Honor of Kings. Its answer is SAEP, the Screen Automation Execution Protocol: a 30-day notice period that ended on 14 October 2026, after which apps that have not declined are opened up in stages by risk tier. Press counts of the refusal list differ (151, 153 and 155 were all reported), and it names WeChat, Alipay, Taobao, Meituan and Xiaohongshu.

This is a China product. Outside China the Doubao site refused us, and the assistant only runs on two nubia models. Separately, the Doubao app removed custom agent creation on 15 July 2026 under China's new rules on human-like AI; we found no source linking that change to the phone assistant. If you are outside China, the nearest equivalents run in the cloud rather than on the handset. Gemini Spark works through Gmail, Calendar and Docs from Google-run machines, while ChatGPT Work carries projects across connected apps and files. Developers who want to host their own agent can start with OpenClaw. For small-business jobs there is Meta's Muse. For an assistant with its own phone line, look at Cue, which comes from Manus. Pricing

No separate software price found. The assistant ships inside supported nubia phones: the M153 prototype at 3,499 yuan (about $523, an estimate) and the NaviX Ultra from 5,999 yuan (about $897, an estimate), converted on 23 October 2026.

Strengths

• Operates apps that offer no API by looking at the screen and tapping like a person, instead of waiting for each app maker to build an integration.
• Stops at payment and other sensitive steps and asks you to finish them, so a mistaken order does not become a mistaken charge.
• Publishes its opt-out rules and a refusal list on its official site, so which apps are off limits is visible instead of discovered by trial.

Weaknesses

• Apps most people use daily, including WeChat, Alipay and Taobao, are on the refusal list, so the headline errands of shopping, paying and chatting are partly out of reach.
• Needs a specific phone: only two nubia models carry it, and ByteDance says it is still negotiating with other handset makers.
• Built for China: the Doubao site showed a region block when opened from Singapore on 24 October 2026, and we found no sales channel outside the country.
• The screen-control path is labeled Beta, and ByteDance itself says demo scenarios cannot be guaranteed to repeat.
