Andi Search Is Free for the Third Year Running. That's Not Entirely Reassuring.

Andi Search is a free, ad-free AI answer engine with no account requirement, run by a small Y Combinator-backed company that has raised 3.11 million dollars in seed funding since 2022 and has not yet launched its planned paid Andi Plus tier or developer API.

The short version

PCMag named Andi Search its Best Free AI Search Engine for the third straight year in March 2026, but the paid Andi Plus tier the company has discussed since 2022 still has not shipped. Andi remains the strongest ad-free, no-account answer engine for individual searchers, though anyone weighing long-term reliability should also look at Komo AI or Bing.

PCMag named Andi Search its Best Free AI Search Engine for the third year running on March 24, 2026. That was also the month the startup's promised paid tier, Andi Plus, turned two years overdue.

Andi has never charged for a search, run an ad, or required an account. It pairs that with a self-reported 87% accuracy score on the independent SearchBench benchmark, whose first edition ran in September 2024.

For someone picking a daily AI-answer-engine default and weighing privacy against reliability, a product with no ads and no login is a rare combination. But Andi Inc. has raised just $3.11 million in total seed funding since its Winter 2022 Y Combinator batch, up from the $2.5 million TechCrunch reported when the company had two co-founders, Angela Hoover and Jed White, and about 5,000 users. Three straight years of staying free is starting to read less like generosity and more like the only option the company has left.

What "no account, no caps" actually means

Open andisearch.com and ask a question. There is no sign-in wall and no daily limit on either web or mobile.

The free plan covers every feature the product has: sourced answers, filters, summaries, related links. Komo AI, a comparable answer engine, requires an account before it will run a search at all, and its free plan runs on a daily credit allowance rather than unlimited use, according to Komo's own pricing page. Andi's PCMag citation calls out the same friendliness: reviewers praised how easily the interface lets you check sources and filter results, not just that it is free.

The free-forever bet

Three straight PCMag wins is real recognition. It is also three straight years without evidence that Andi can turn recognition into revenue.

The company's own March 2026 announcement of the latest award does not mention Andi Plus, the paid tier and developer API that outside coverage has been describing as "in the works" since at least September 2022, the month TechCrunch first covered Andi's YC-backed launch. No price, no waitlist, no launch window has surfaced in the three and a half years since.

That is not automatically a red flag. A lean answer engine that licenses its models rather than training them can serve a large free user base for far less than a frontier AI lab burns in a single month.

Hoover told TechCrunch in 2022 the company's runway ran "well over two years" on $2.5 million. Stretched to $3.11 million and three-plus years later, that is a real accomplishment, not a warning sign by itself. The problem is that nobody outside the company has published what Andi's user count, query volume, or headcount looks like today.

What "free" costs somewhere else

Andi is not the only zero-cost option in AI search, and the other free plans show what Andi has chosen not to do.

Komo's free plan gives 25 credits a day and never expires, but a heavy research day can run out of budget before the workday does. Komo Pro costs $17 a month billed annually for 2,000 monthly credits, every premium model, and deep research; Komo Max runs $170 a month for 25,000 credits, according to Komo's own pricing page. That is a stated business model, whatever else it is.

Komo AI's pricing page: Free at $0 forever with 25 daily credits, Komo Pro at $17/month with 2,000 monthly credits, Komo Max at $170/month with 25,000 credits.

Komo's three tiers, captured 9 September 2026. Andi has no equivalent page, because it has no paid tier.

Bing's Deep Search, Microsoft's agentic search mode, is also free with no account required for a basic query. But it sits inside a company with the balance sheet to subsidize it indefinitely, regardless of whether Bing Deep Search itself ever turns a profit.

Andi is the only one of the three with neither a shipped paid tier nor a parent company's balance sheet behind it, next to Komo's stated upgrade path and Bing's Microsoft backing. That is precisely the gap Andi Plus was supposed to close.

Where Andi loses

None of this touches the product's actual limits. Andi is built for a single searcher asking direct questions, not a team that needs shared workspaces, citation exports for a report, or an enterprise contract with an SLA.

Perplexity covers that end of the market with paid tiers built around outside investment most two- and three-person teams cannot match, and You.com sits somewhere between the two, with its own account-based free tier and paid plans. If your use case is a team drafting research with citations, Andi's individual, ad-free design is not the constraint that matters. Its lack of collaboration features is.

The turn

The obvious read is that no paid tier in three and a half years means Andi has failed to find a business model. That is too simple.

A small team serving a large free, ad-free user base is not automatically burning cash the way a company training its own frontier models would, and Andi licenses rather than trains, which keeps its compute bill a fraction of a typical AI lab's. A product that grew from roughly 5,000 users in 2022 to a three-time national award winner by 2026 on one seed round is a real possibility of quiet, sustainable growth, not just a hopeful spin.

What complicates that comfort is the recognition itself. A third PCMag win and a benchmark score ahead of competitors on the metric Andi chose to publish raise expectations that investors, users, and eventually acquirers hold the company to, whether or not it asked for them. And every well-funded rival, Microsoft's search arm, Perplexity's outside-funded team, can outspend a $3.11 million seed round indefinitely the moment attention becomes the thing being competed for rather than discovery.

What to watch

Andi Plus actually shipping with a real price, or Andi announcing a new funding round beyond its 2022 seed, would resolve the question this piece is built on either way. Neither has happened as of this article's September 2026 publication.

Absent one of those two events within the next two quarters, the safest read is that Andi's free tier is not a promotion. It is the whole business.

Andi does not need to ship Andi Plus to keep existing. It needs to stay worth discovering before a much bigger company's free tier makes the distinction between them disappear. Frequently asked questions

Is Andi Search actually free?

Yes, entirely: no ads, no account requirement, and no daily search cap on web or mobile as of September 2026. PCMag has named it Best Free AI Search Engine three years running, most recently on March 24, 2026.

What is Andi Plus?

Andi Plus is a paid tier and developer API that Andi Inc. has described as in development since around 2022. As of this article's publication, no price, launch date, or feature list has been announced.

How much funding does Andi have?

Andi Inc. has raised $3.11 million in seed funding since joining Y Combinator's Winter 2022 batch, with backers including Gaingels and Goodwater Capital, according to Tracxn's company profile.

What is the difference between Andi and Komo AI?

Komo AI requires an account and limits free use with a daily credit allowance, while Andi has no account requirement and no usage cap. Komo also already sells a paid tier for premium models and deep research, giving it a clearer revenue plan than Andi currently has.

Should I use Andi Search for team research?

Not primarily. Andi is built for a single searcher, not shared workspaces or citation exports for reports. Perplexity and You.com both offer more team- and enterprise-oriented features, backed by significantly more outside funding.
