Gauth, a photo-based AI study app from Singapore's GauthTech, has passed 100M Google Play downloads and returns step-by-step solutions for math, science and writing questions. It differs from math-only solvers by bundling a voice tutor, study-set tools and a web version into one app.

About Gauth

Gauth is a homework help app from GauthTech Pte. Ltd., a Singapore company. It launched in 2020 as Gauthmath, a photo-based math solver, and was renamed Gauth in 2024 as it widened beyond math to more subjects. Axios reported in April 2024 that the app shares an owner with TikTok, ByteDance, and noted that neither company answered its request for comment. The site has also claimed 200 million users, a figure Forbes relayed and Axios cited.

You photograph or type a question and the app returns a worked solution with an explanation of each step. Its DeepThinking mode is described as drawing on multiple AI models, but neither the App Store listing, the Play listing nor the plans page names them, so there is no way to tell from the vendor's pages which model answered your question. Around the solver sit an AI Live Tutor that talks a problem through on a whiteboard, a converter that turns notes or lecture links into quizzes (a job NotebookLM also takes on), and a writing checker in the vein of Grammarly.

Gauth fits a student who has already tried a problem and wants to see where the method went wrong, which is how one five-star reviewer quoted on its homepage says they use it. It fits a parent who wants the working, not only the result. It is a poor fit for work graded as your own: the homepage states that Gauth is built to support learning, not to replace a student's own effort, and a solver that returns finished answers makes that line easy to cross.

Gauth runs on iPhone, iPad, Android and in a web browser. Photomath is the nearest single-purpose app, staying on phones and focused on math. Another in the same category is Mathos AI, a math solver with a web version. Open-ended explanation across subjects is a general assistant's job: ChatGPT is the best known, with Google's Gemini as the counterpart. A quick one-off photo lookup at no cost is what Google Lens does. Browse the rest of the study and grading category or read the school AI guide for what each option costs.

The ratings are strong on the stores and weak elsewhere. The App Store shows 4.8 from about 1.5M ratings and Google Play shows 4.7 across 2.08M reviews, yet Gauth's homepage displays 4.8 from 1.9M for both stores, a figure that matches neither listing as read on 2026-10-05.

Pricing

Free to download with in-app purchases. 99 yearly, all auto-renewing. 66 a month, 11% less than monthly.

Prices vary by country: the vendor's plans page quoted its free plan in Indonesian rupiah when we loaded it, so the page localises currency. Renewal is switched off in Apple ID settings at least 24 hours before the period ends, not inside Gauth. Photomath is the nearest price comparison for a math-only app.

Key Features

  • Photo and typed solver: Returns a worked solution with a short explanation of each step for a photographed or typed question, across five App Store subject groups: math, biology, physics, chemistry and others.
  • AI Live Tutor: Lets you ask by voice at any hour while the working is drawn on a virtual whiteboard, as an alternative to rereading a static solution.
  • DeepThinking mode: A slower mode for harder questions that the vendor says draws on multiple AI models; it does not name which ones.
  • Human expert network: The homepage reports thousands of tutors on call around the clock, 50k verified experts, a 98.5% satisfaction rate and solutions in as little as 5 minutes; these are vendor figures with no published audit.
  • Smart Study Converter: Turns notes, audio or lecture links into quizzes and flashcards, so a study set can be built from material you already have.
  • Study toolbox: Bundles an AI writing assistant for grammar and structure, a text simplifier, a calculator and a focus timer in the same app.
  • Language coverage: The App Store lists English plus 13 more languages, so the app is not limited to English-speaking students.
  • Plus content library: Plus adds a library of 20M+ tutorial videos and 100M+ practice questions, plus priority expert guidance, per the App Store listing.

Pros

  • Covers school subjects beyond math in one app, so a student can drop a separate solver plus general chatbot for routine homework.
  • Runs in a web browser as well as on iOS and Android, where Photomath is limited to the two phone platforms.
  • A free download and a plan trial let you test accuracy on problems you have already solved before paying anything.

Cons

  • Trustpilot averages 2.3 from 86 reviews at the time of writing, and one February 2026 review alleges monthly charges continued for over two years because in-app cancellation failed; treat it as one customer's account, but cancel through your Apple ID or store account and note the renewal date.
  • The vendor names no model behind its answers, so reliability on unusual or multi-step problems cannot be judged from its listings, and its 98.5% satisfaction figure measures satisfaction, not correctness.
  • The free plan is capped but the cap is unpublished, and Plus costs more per month than Photomath Plus at the monthly and yearly US prices recorded for each this week, though regional pricing differs.
  • Axios reported that the privacy policy covers photos, chats, contacts, purchase information and location; check the current policy before uploading images of coursework.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Gauth cost in 2026?

Paid access is a single plan, Gauth Plus. The US App Store lists it at $11.99 a month, $31.99 a quarter and $99.99 a year, and the vendor says it removes the limits on answers and Gauth AI queries. Local prices and introductory offers appear in-app, so confirm the figure before subscribing. The yearly option is the one that changes the arithmetic; the quarterly plan saves little over monthly.

What do you get on Gauth's free tier?

The vendor's plans page gives the free plan limited access to answers, Gauth AI queries and Gauth AI Pro solutions, and lists a 3-day Plus trial. It publishes no numeric daily cap, so the allowance can change without notice. Third-party reviews quote exact daily limits, but Gauth states none, so treat those figures as unverified.

Which tools compete with Gauth in 2026?

[Photomath](/hub/tools/photomath) is the closest rival if you only need math: it keeps a free core on iOS and Android, but its help center lists statistics and probability as unsupported. Essay feedback and other open-ended questions suit a conversation-first assistant, where [ChatGPT](/hub/tools/chatgpt) is the usual pick and Google's [Gemini](/hub/tools/gemini) the alternative. For a free quick lookup without worked steps, there is [Google Lens](/hub/tools/google-lens).

Gauth or Photomath: which should you pick?

Pick Gauth for subjects beyond math, a browser version and human tutor backup; pick Photomath for a lighter math-only app with a free core. Gauth lists statistics and probability among its math topics, which Photomath's help center excludes. Ownership differs too: Photomath belongs to Google, while Axios reported Gauth shares an owner with TikTok, which matters if you mind who stores photos of your coursework.

How long does it take to get going with Gauth?

Setup is short: install the iPhone, iPad or Android app, or open the web version, then photograph or type a question. The download is free. The App Store rates the app 4+ and Google Play rates it 3+, yet Axios reported in 2024 that Gauth's terms ask users to be 13 or older, so younger children should use it with a parent. Start with a problem you have already solved and compare the steps before relying on it for new work.

Top Alternatives

  • Photomath: Pick Photomath if you only need math steps with a free core on iOS or Android; pick Gauth for other subjects, a web version and human tutors.
  • ChatGPT: Pick ChatGPT when you want open-ended back-and-forth and essay feedback; pick Gauth when the starting point is a photographed homework problem.
  • Google Lens: Pick Google Lens for one-off photo lookups at no cost; pick Gauth when you want worked steps and a tutor option.
  • Gemini: Pick Gemini for open-ended topics across subjects; pick Gauth for a dedicated homework workflow with step-by-step solutions.
