Founded in 2015 by animation producer James Chambers, Boords is a browser-based pre-production platform that combines a two-column script editor, storyboards, timed animatics and no-account client review. It adds optional AI image generation and a beta chat assistant, and exposes an MCP server and an API for connecting AI apps.

About Boords

Boords is a browser-based pre-production platform for video agencies and in-house creative teams. James Chambers built the first version in 2015 after his London animation studio, Animade, kept losing track of storyboard versions across PDFs, slides and email threads. It is run by Presentable Software Limited, a small independent UK company, and the vendor says more than 2 million storyboards have been made on it.

A project starts as a script, written in a two-column audio and visual editor that times the voiceover as you type, or imported from a file. One click converts the script into storyboard frames. The conversion is a snapshot, so later script edits do not update the board. Frames take your own images, stock images or AI-generated ones, and a drag reorders and renumbers them. The Animatic tool then turns the board into a timed sequence with an uploaded soundtrack, so pacing can be reviewed before any footage exists.

AI is optional and sits on top of the workflow rather than replacing it. Image generation runs through the Google Gemini API and fal.ai, with a menu of Nano Banana 2 and two GPT Image options, while script ingestion uses OpenAI. A beta chat assistant called Boords Agent can rough out a board, restyle images and reorder frames, and it pauses for approval before deleting anything. Boords says it does not train models on customer content, and an admin can switch every AI feature off for the whole account. Through its MCP server, Claude and ChatGPT can also read and edit projects.

It fits studios that sell or produce animation, explainer, advertising and training video and need a clean approval trail before anyone opens an editor. If the next step is generating footage, LTX Studio pairs storyboards with video models. Vyond builds the finished animation, Animaker does the same for explainer and whiteboard styles, and the usual stand-in for occasional slide-style boards is Canva. HokAI lists these in its AI storyboard generators and AI video generators directories, and the roundup of the best AI tools to create images and videos covers the generation step that follows.

Behind the scenes, script conversion runs on models from OpenAI, image generation uses the Gemini API from Google, and the same MCP connection works from Claude Code as well as chat apps, so a board can be built from a terminal session.

Pricing

Free plan with no card required. Paid monthly list prices: Solo $39 (1 user, 250 AI images), Pro $75 (up to 5 users, 1,000 images), Team $125 (up to 10 users, 2,000 images) and Agency $250 (up to 30 users, 3,000 images). Yearly billing is shown as $26, $50, $85 and $165 a month, roughly a third lower.

Enterprise adds SAML single sign-on, custom seats and DPA support on a quote. Unused AI credits reset each cycle and do not roll over. Prices read from the vendor pricing page on 2026-10-09.

A storyboard-capable video tool priced by credits, LTX Studio, is the closest comparison on HokAI.

Key Features

  • Two-column script editor: Writes scripts in free-form or two-column audio and visual layouts, estimates running time with automatic voiceover timing, and converts the finished script to storyboard frames in one click.
  • Frame-level client review: Clients comment on the frame itself through a share link with no login or account, with unlimited guest comments, optional password protection and a version history that records what was signed off.
  • Animatic tool: Turns the board into a timed sequence; an uploaded audio file of up to 20MB sets the timeline length, and the result is shared by link or downloaded as an MP4.
  • AI image generator: Creates frame images with Nano Banana 2 or GPT Image 2.5 options at 0.5K or 1K resolution, charging one credit per image, with saved Styles and restyling to keep a board visually consistent.
  • Boords Agent (beta): A chat assistant in the editor that roughs out a board from a description, imports script files, reorders frames and restyles images; irreversible steps such as deleting a frame wait for your approval.
  • Asset Library references: Stores characters, locations and props that you call into a prompt with the @ symbol, allowing up to four content references per Agent message to keep a character the same from frame to frame.
  • MCP server and API: Claude, ChatGPT and Claude Code can read and edit projects over MCP on every plan including Free (beta), and a REST API (beta) with webhooks is available on paid plans.
  • Team controls: From the Team plan up: project-level permissions, client-hidden comments, customizable templates, a team invite link and a custom subdomain; SAML single sign-on sits on Enterprise.

Pros

  • No-account client review removes the most common stall in approvals, and the vendor reports more than 1 million projects shared with clients for feedback.
  • Keeping script, board and animatic in one project means the approved version is always on record, which is the clearest gain over a slides-and-PDF workflow.
  • AI is opt-in: an admin can disable every AI feature for the account, and the vendor states customer content is not used to train models.
  • The security page is candid, stating plainly which certifications Boords does not hold and naming its sub-processors and hosting region.

Cons

  • Boords says it is not certified to SOC 2 or ISO 27001, so strict procurement teams will need the Security Overview and a DPA instead of an audit report.
  • Image credits are metered per image and expire each billing period, so heavy AI users on the lower plans can run dry before the cycle ends.
  • Script-to-storyboard conversion is a one-time snapshot, so edits made to the script afterwards have to be repeated on the board.
  • Project permissions, client-hidden comments and custom subdomains begin on the Team plan, so small agencies on Pro lack them.
  • Boords Agent and the MCP connections are still in beta, and the vendor warns usage limits may apply in future.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Boords' pricing plans in 2026?

On monthly billing, Solo costs $39, Pro $75, Team $125 and Agency $250, covering 1, 5, 10 and 30 users and 250, 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000 AI images a month. Paying yearly lowers those to $26, $50, $85 and $165 a month. Enterprise is quoted individually. The metered part is AI image credits, which reset each billing period, and an annual plan receives the whole year's allowance at the start.

Does Boords have a free plan?

Yes, and it needs no credit card. It allows 5 active storyboards and 3 active scripts, plus 8 one-off sample AI image credits, and PDF exports carry a Boords watermark. The Nano Banana 2 and GPT Image Sunburst models, 1K image resolution, new script versions and passphrase-protected review links all need a paid plan.

What are the best alternatives to Boords?

StudioBinder bundles call sheets and production scheduling, so it suits crews that run the shoot as well as the board. [LTX Studio](/hub/tools/ltx-studio) fits teams that want the storyboard to feed straight into AI-generated footage. Canva works for occasional slide-style boards that do not need client versioning.

What separates Boords from StudioBinder?

Boords is narrow and deep on the board itself: two-column scripts, frame-level client comments without a login, versioned approvals and a timed animatic. StudioBinder reaches into production management with call sheets and scheduling. Choose Boords when the deliverable is a signed-off board, and StudioBinder when one tool should also run the shoot.

How do you set up Boords?

Sign up on the free plan, create a project, then paste a script into the editor or ask the beta Agent (a team admin switches it on) to import a PDF, text, Markdown, HTML or CSV file. Convert the script to frames, add images, and send the review link so clients can comment without an account. To use Claude or ChatGPT with it, add the connection under Settings, Team, Connections, which works on every plan.
